As of today, the coronavirus pandemic has already spread its tentacles to affect more than a million lives all over the world, in every way possible_ physically, emotionally, and financially.
‘Financially‘_ that’s the keyword here.
Hundreds of thousands of global companies and agencies have taken a hard hit. With economies tumbling down, many employees have suddenly found themselves out in the streets, jobless.
You know the rest.
Where do freelancers stand in this scenario?
Ouch! It feels like we freelancers have landed on a ton of hot bricks.
Let me tell you why:-
1. Payment delays
It’s already tough for us to find clients who pay right on time. Add to that the economic crisis that nearly every country is going through, and voila! We have our first problem_ not getting paid quick enough for us to pay our bills. Boo-hoo!
2. Projects Halt
Most of the nations have imposed a lockdown, as you very well know. Even though it’s for the best, this has led many clients to put a stop to their projects all of a sudden. They may have plans to restart these projects in the future, or they may have not, but, well, there you go!
You know how a freelancer’s life is. Whether you’re a freelance writer or a graphic designer, every single day involves pitching to potential clients, delivering projects to your existing clients, calling them, doing research on the latest trends in your field, and whatnot.
It’s one of the busiest lives ever! And the toughest.
But you know what?
Leading such a difficult life has made us freelancers stronger.
Yes, the coronavirus outbreak has impacted all our lives in a big, bad way. But it hasn’t stopped us from keeping ourselves going!
Come storm, rain, tornado, or COVID-19.
Being a freelancer means you know how to survive.
(Yeah, make that your motto, and thank me later.)
Pile up your stack of cash higher and higher: Here’s how
To make some extra bucks amidst this lockdown situation, take a look at these tips:-
1. Learn how to diversify your income
As a freelancer, diversifying your income should come naturally to you. If it doesn’t already, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get to work.
For example, if you’ve just started out as a freelance content writer, don’t just stick to writing for just the blogs or websites where you already post. Start pitching to other clients so that you can write for them, too.
But that’s what most of us already do on any normal day, right?
Diversifying your income means earning through ways other than what you usually do.
Think of it this way. You’re a freelance content writer who writes for multiple websites. But you need more money, so what do you do?
You rack your brains, and you think of working as a freelance proofreader, along with being a writer. Or, you can design graphics for new clients.
So, the present lockdown has opened up several doors for you. How, you ask?
Well, most of the business firms have started working remotely now. And the digital world is our world! This is where we freelancers belong! What better time to utilize various ways of earning an extra income than now?
Start thinking of your strengths. List them down, if you have to.
For example, if your typing speed is high, work as a part-time or freelance typist. The work can be as easy as just copying words from images and typing them on MS Word, or it might involve something else.
Are you good at drawing or designing? Become a freelance graphic designer or an illustrator, then. Or work as a copywriter, if ads are your thang.
What I mean to say is, if you’re already a freelance writer, you can work as a freelance content writer-cum-typist-cum-graphic designer. Or, if you’re a graphic designer, you can be a freelance graphic designer-cum-proofreader-cum-blog writer. How you want to diversify your income is totally up to you!
2. Write and sell an e-book
Let’s say you’ve been working as a freelance graphic designer for a couple of years or so. In all that time, you must’ve gained a lot of know-how related to your field.
Well, now’s the time to put all that you know to good use_ compile an e-book!
Still can’t think of what to write about? I get it_ your brain is brimming with so much information that you’ve collected over the years, that you can’t seem to know where to start.
I feel you, bruh.
If I were you, I’d write an e-book for beginners, titled, ‘Tips on Using The Colour Theory: What, How, When and Why‘. Or it would be something like, ‘Adobe Illustrator Do’s and Don’ts: It’s Pro Time‘.
Professional freelance content writers, it’s your turn, now. How about writing an e-book on your freelancing journey itself? That would be really helpful for freshers, you know.
So, you’ve written your e-book. Now what?
You sell it. On your website, your blog, or via Amazon or other online selling platforms.
If you don’t have so many followers, don’t worry! You could also reach out to someone who’s got a good number of followers or newsletter subscribers, and enter into a mutually beneficial partnership with him or her.
3. Launch your own online courses
If you don’t feel like writing an entire e-book, you can use your knowledge in another way. Start teaching and training people who are interested in starting out in your field!
The next step is to plan your own course curriculum. That means you have to choose which topics you want to explain to your audience, and then upload videos of yourself explaining each of those topics. I’ve also seen some people teach their audience online via slideshows.
Once you’ve uploaded your teaching videos on the platform and promoted them, interested people will pay to access your online courses.
And if they love your courses and find them really informative, you’ve just hit the money ball out of the park, man!
4. Embrace affiliate marketing
If you’ve got a huge number of Twitter followers, blog visitors, or a long, long mailing list, you should embrace affiliate marketing like it’s your brother.
Because during this lockdown, it’s the chance of a lifetime!
Remember, at this time, nearly everyone is inside his or her home and getting sick to the bone of boredom. And nearly everyone is checking his or her cell phone every half an hour or so, if not more.
Now, do you get me? (wink)
So, you can start selling affiliate products to all your followers or subscribers, and get a commission every time someone buys that product. Check out Amazon Associates_ it lets you sell products on behalf of others.
5. Master new skills
Even when I’ll reach the age of 90 (if I live to do so), I’ll still be learning something new. And so will you! E-learning is the new trend these days.
But how’s that going to fill up your pockets with extra bucks?
Well, if you develop new skills related to your field or other ones, you can get new clients who may be looking for someone possessing just the skillsets that you do!
For example, after I had mastered the concept of SEO, I learned basic graphic designing from one of HubSpot’s online courses. A little bit of practice, a little bit of promotion, and I got a new client who loved my designs!
In the same way, you can go through courses on platforms like Coursera, Udemy, HubSpot, etc. Whether you want to learn business analytics, SEO, digital marketing, graphic designing, email marketing, sales, languages, or anything under the sun, you’ll get it all on these platforms.
The courses on Coursera are taught by university professors, while HubSpot’s own employees or some of their partners teach their courses. Both of these platforms offer certificate courses, too.
So, basically, the more you learn, the more you know. And the more you know, the more clients you get. And the more clients you get, the more money it rains, hallelujah!
To sum up
The lockdown that we now find ourselves in presents endless possibilities for us freelancers to earn extra bucks in 2020.
Since most of the business firms are going digital and looking for remote workers, now’s your time to shine brighter!
Apart from the tips listed above, you can also think of other ways in which extra bucks could land in your pockets. You just need to stretch out your hand and grab that opportunity, and grab it real fast.
We can beat COVID-19 and still earn extra money because we freelancers rule the online world!
